Wardrobe Wednesday {Stocking Stuffers for Shutterbugs}

Want to know what to get the camera lover on your list? Here’s a great place to start! Morgan compiled a list of fun and functional things that will make any shutterbug smile without breaking the bank.

There is just not enough time left in the shopping season to be anything but honest and straightforward, so here goes: This is the kind of stuff I would want as a photographer, and I think it can help you, too. If you’re a photographer, you can send a link to this post to friends or family who need gift ideas. If you need to get a gift for a photographer or shutterbug, you’ve come to the right place. Here we go…

THINGS TO STASH INSIDE A CAMERA BAG:

Memory Cards: Photographers really can never have too many of these. When buying them, just be sure you know what format your photog uses. Compact Flash and SD are the most common, but double check since you never know. My personal collection includes a bunch of SanDisk 8GB compact flash cards, but I wouldn’t turn down a larger size (who would?). These can be purchased at so many different stores, so be sure to compare prices.

Batteries: When I asked the other WW girls about their stocking stuffer wish list, batteries were the first things mentioned. Flashes and other gear will burn through these puppies in no time – extras are a must! For professionals, be sure to splurge on lithium.

Lens Cleaner: What happens when mud gets on a lens? Smudges or sticky kid fingers? This two-step solution will easily fix the day. All you need to do is use a few drops of the solution and then use the pads to wipe it away. Easy!

Pop-Up Flash Diffuser: If your photog has a camera with a pop-up flash, this is a great gift idea. While the flash is easy and convenient, the light is often harsh and less than flattering. The best way to even out the light is by diffusing it somehow, and this puffer couldn’t be easier. It slides over the flash and automatically diffuses the light – awesome!

Towelettes and Wipes: These little wipes are such a lifesaver for both the photographer and their clients. Large bottles of sunscreen or insect repellent aren’t likely to make their way into a camera bag, but there is always room to stash a few of these. If the model – or photographer – start to get a little shiny, the blotter papers can be a great fix when you’re on the go.

FUN CAMERA GIFTS: These are just cute camera-related gifts that would make any photog smile. My personal favorite may be the “Oh Snap” bag, but that’s just because it also comes on a onesie. :-)

FASHIONABLE AND FUNCTIONAL:

Fingerless Gloves: If you shooting in the cold, you’ll want a pair of fingerless gloves. If you’re sitting at your desk on a cool morning and want a little warmth, you’ll want a pair of fingerless gloves. Tons of colors – various warmth levels. A perfect gift!

Custom Camera Strap: Why stick with the boring old black camera strap when you can have one with style!

Coffee Mug: Coffee mug? What’s so special about a coffee mug? This one actually keeps your coffee HOT! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made myself a cup of coffee or tea and then sat down to do a little editing. Before I know it, I’ve completely forgotton about my drink and it’s gone cold. This mug has a lid and stainless steel double wall interior (read: warm drinks). Note – they also make a travel version!

Madeline {Class of 2012} | Dallas Senior Photographer | Erica May Photography

Amazing girl + amazing light = amazingly huge sneak peek =)

I was lucky enough to meet Madeline this past weekend (yes, as in 2 days ago – I was a little excited to edit these pictures) at one of my favorite spots. We were lucky enough to a have a beautiful day for December full of sunshine and amazing light! She brought some awesome outfits and I loved the colors she picked. I picked up these cool new pillows a few days before her session and she brought a shirt that was perfect to go with them! She said her favorite color was purple and we definitely captured that in her first set of images. Madeline is so sweet and funny and it really shines through her portraits. She is super smart and talented and has already been accepted to Centenary College of Louisiana where she will play soccer. Good luck in the future Madeline, you are beautiful!

Mark {Class of 2012} | Plano Senior Photographer | Erica May Photography

A few weeks ago I got to meet up early in the morning to shoot Mark’s senior portraits. Mark is a senior at Plano East Senior High School and he was so much fun to work with. He was a little quiet at first but once I got him warmed up he was quite funny! =P A few years ago I got to photograph his older brother Joey, who was one of my first seniors! I am so grateful that they chose me again to photograph Mark. It was so nice meeting you, enjoy!

Wardrobe Wednesday {what to wear} | Senior Style On A Budget

GREAT shopping advice for seniors from Lindsay. I know most of my seniors come with bags and bags of clothes — some with the tags still on — so here’s proof that you don’t have to spend like crazy to get a stylish look from head to toe!

Here’s what she has to say:

Wardrobe is such an important aspect of your overall portrait experience, but putting together the type of wardrobe you want can often become expensive quickly! This is especially the case for seniors who might be more fashion-conscious than the average consumer. Well, don’t fear, you can put together several great and stylish outfits without breaking the bank! I’ve compiled three looks from head to toe, accessories and all, for less than $175. Better yet, substitute some of your own existing items (like boots or jeans) and save even more.

For the classic casual look, I’ve paired a great pair of boots with a beautiful sweater and belt combo. Add in the scarf and knit hat or wear it on its own. If it’s too cold to stick with short sleeves, you could easily throw on a long-sleeve shirt underneath for a nice layered look. One thing I always recommend to my cool-weather seniors is to use a great jacket to expand your wardrobe. Throwing on a jacket can give the appearance of a completely different outfit, especially when paired with some other cold weather accessories like a colorful scarf and hat. For the dressier look, I went with a pretty seasonal sweater dress glammed up with some fun accessories like the feather headband and necklace. Add the jacket on top for a few shots to change it up once again!

There are great deals to be found, especially this time of year! You can get a steal at stores like Forever 21 and Wet Seal, especially on shoes and accessories, while you can grab your staples at a great price at stores like Target and Old Navy. Happy shopping!

The Martin Family | Allen Family Photographer | Erica May Photography

A few weeks ago I got to meet this awesome family at one of my favorite nature spots. This spot looks awesome in the fall and I just loved all the vibrant fall colors. It was very windy and cloudy the day of our session but the temperature was awesome for a November day. The Martin family are new clients for me and I just loved them! They are so sweet and their kids are probably some of the most well-behaved kids I have met. Mom put together an awesome wardrobe (and she was  worried about it, HA!). They were just going to do pictures of the children but I am really glad they hopped in a few. I hope you enjoyed your session as much as I did and it is so nice having you as new clients!

What mom says about Cayson:

“Cayson is our little trouble maker!!  He is also full of energy and wants everyones attention on him.  He loves making funny faces and laughs at everything.  He loves playing ball and just following big brother and sister around.  He thinks he is as old as they are.”

What mom says about Hudson:

“Hudson is our stubborn one.  He is full of energy and goes non-stop.  He loves action heroes, riding his bike, climbing, space and just being a boy.  He loves the outdoors.”

What mom says about Payton:

“Payton is all girl.  She loves dressing up, tea parties, spa days, barbies, fancy nancy.  Basically anything that is girly.  She can be shy at first but opens up pretty quick.”
